What Is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary public healthcare during a temporary stay in any EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland - under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in that country.

What the EHIC Covers
- Emergency treatment
- Accidents and injuries
- Sudden illness (e.g., infection, high fever, allergic reactions)
- Chronic or existing conditions if treatment becomes necessary
- Maternity care (not planned birth abroad)
This applies only in public hospitals or clinics that are part of the state healthcare system.
What the EHIC Does NOT Cover
- Private healthcare
- Planned medical treatment abroad
- Repatriation or travel back home in case of serious illness
- Lost or stolen belongings
For full protection, it’s recommended to also have travel insurance.
Who Can Get It?
Anyone who is insured or covered by a state social security system in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
It is usually issued by your national health insurance authority.
How to Use It When Abroad
- Present your EHIC (or the digital version, if your country offers one) at the hospital or clinic.
- You will either receive free treatment or pay the same reduced price as local residents.
- Keep all documents and receipts in case your home insurance needs them.
Why Erasmus Students Need It
- It ensures you get basic medical care while studying or doing an internship abroad.
- Many universities require it before signing Erasmus documents.
- It prevents high medical costs in case of emergencies.
